On March 2, 1861, the United States government organized the Dakota Territory. It was later split up into North Dakota and some other states.

What is this North Dakota for, anyway?

Bismarck became the capital of Dakota Territory around 1883, when they offered money and land. Yankton was the prior capital...although when Bismarck became the capital of North Dakota, Yankton missed out on being the South Dakota capital. I don't know why.
