New Yorker

Old: A New Yorker article from 2002 about the efforts to drop the "North" and become just "Dakota." The piece is a surprisingly even-handed look at a very stupid idea.

Hey Chris - I like the "Dakota" idea. So there. By the way, the new New Yorker - with the Lincoln Memorial cover - has a picture of Stanley, ND on the inside cover advertisement, as part of a Morgan Stanely campaign. I assume they're assholes.

What did you possibly like about the name "Dakota?" It was an utterly feeble attempt at rebranding the state as something only slightly different. If we bother to change the name, why not go with something radical, like "North Pimpistan"?

For one, I find it impossible to say "North Dakota" without lapsing into my Fargo, or "Fargo", accent. "Dakota" alone just feels most distinctive and western, like we all live in a John Wayne movie out here. And, I think it would make South Dakotans seem like a bunch of punks. But I like the North Pimpistan idea. How bout The People's Republic of Nuzzackia?
